The 4 elements and the 4 temperaments
Anyone who does not know them, the elements, their power and properties, cannot be a master over the spirits.
GOETHE, Faust I
The four Temperaments - "sanguine", "melancholic", "choleric" and "phlegmatic" - is a theory of psychology that stems from the ancient medical concept of humorism.
Avicenna (980-1037 AD) extended the theory of temperaments to encompass "emotional aspects, mental capacity, moral attitudes, self-awareness, movements and dreams." I. Kant, R. Steiner, A. Adler, E. Fromm and others all theorized on the four temperaments and greatly shaped our modern theories of temperament.
